Observation post
The embrasure of the observation post, in the middle of the photo,
seen with the telephoto lens from the top of Center 19. Immediately below
it you can just see the concrete emergency exit (24/06/1999).
The inside of the observation post, equipped with an armor plate
with a spy hole. Notice the steel I-beams for reinforcement (09/10/1999).
Detail of the rotating cover of the spy hole which was designed
for the small model 917 telescope, the model 912 quadrant, and the 8 x
30 prismatic binoculars (09/10/1999).
The observation post, located at the bottom of the curved steps which
make up the extensions of the main corridor, consists of the following
parts:
- an observation post equipped with an armored plate with a spy hole with
metal I-beams for reinforcing the side walls and the ceiling;
- a living quarters and telephone switchboard, provided with two entrances
(one at the bottom of the steps and one at the front of the observation
post);
- a short internal corridor, curved at the beginning, with an opening toward
the observation post casemate and the living quarters.
In the pavement of the curved part of the corridor you find the trapdoor
opening of the emergency exit. The straight
part butts suddenly against a rock wall where another secondary exist was
planned but never completed.
The corridor of the observatory ends at a rock wall where probably
a secondary exit was planned. On the right in the foreground you see the
entrance of the observation post and, on the left, a second entrance of
the living quarters (09/10/1999).
