Lower entrance
The lower battery entrance with the external service buildings (09/10/1999).
The lower entrance is located at the bottom of a trench which is
flanked by service buildings. You can see the cables which fed electricity
to the external buildings and the tubes for air intake (11/08/1998).
The lower entrance is located on a level surface and is shielded from
direct enemy fire. Two service buildings have been set up there:
-
on the left an edifice probably used for the mess;
-
on the right an outhouse with 4 toilets.
At the end of the trench next to the building on the left there is an arch
carved out of the rock which permits access to a circular space with stone
walls from which the field of fire can be observed.
The access to the battery took place by means of a trench located between
the two service buildings. A wide set of steps leads down to the trench.
The metal grill which blocks the lower entrance has been attached
to the right door frame of the original door, the only piece which hasn't
been carried away. On the right side of the wall, inside, you can
see the depression for receiving the door when in the open position (09/10/1999).
The entrance, originally protected by a metal door, consists of a corridor
out of line with the internal corridor. In the rear wall is the circular
embrasure for the automatic weapon for close defense.
The placement of this post is unusual because it is located above the
pit for the gasoline reservoir for the power supply group.
On the right side of the corridor you find, starting with the first,
the following storage areas:
- an alcove with the double function of gasoline reservoir for the power
supply group (originally placed in a pit in the floor) and a post for an
automatic weapon for close defense;
- two areas for the power supply groups which furnished electricity to the
works;
- two small storage alcoves;
- a area for the water reservoir;
- another small alcove for storage.
